Wanted to work in medical field and have a family.
What events, prior employment, or educational experiences led you to your current job?
Positive experience with a podiatrist as a child. Occupation visits while in college exposed me to all fields of medicine and I chose podiatry.
What schooling, education, and/or certifications did you complete to prepare you for this career?
BS Biology, DPM degree, 3 years Surgical/Trauma Residency
How did you make the best use of your time in both your education and career?
Graduated and finished residency at age 29- no breaks. I have worked in the same practice for 24 years.
What advice would you give to a high school or college student interested in pursuing this field of work?
Talk to practicing physicians before spending time and money pursuing degree.
What opportunities would you suggest high school students participate in?
Volunteer at hospital/clinics and shadow a private practice.
What opportunities did you take as a student that helped advance your career (research, internships, etc.)
Internships, and being a teacher assistant.
What does a typical day at your job look like?
Private practice with 60 % time with patient care, 20% administration and 20% paperwork.
What was a surprising aspect of your job?
Lack of work ethic in many employees.
What qualities are necessary to be successful in your field of work, and why?
Dedication, hard work, empathy, multi-tasking, knowledge.
